A man who has done nothing in political office and even less for "peace" gets the nobel. Reagan, who was a key figure in ending the cold war, never got one while Gorbachev did. It was laughable having Gore win one and Yashir Arafat, but this is ridiculous. Thoughts.|||Once again it proves the Nobel Peace Prize is part of the satchel of tools used to forward their political agenda. It has nothing to do with accomplishments and has everything to do with Obama's hatred of America and Israel.|||This illustrious Nobel Peace Prize does not always award acheivements alone, but also recipients' efforts. It recognizes people trying beyond their call to get the world on a more peaceful path.
In reference to nuclear weapons, Obama persuaded the people of the most powerful nation in the world to chose him and his vision of strength through diplomacy.|||It is ridiculous -- there's no doubt. But in all fairness, the Nobel Peace Prize has always been the "softest" of the prizes anyway. It's awarded, not by specialists in the field, like the prizes for Physics or Chemistry, etc. It's awarded by the Norwegian National Assembly (their national Parliament).
As a result, this award carries far less weight. It's VERY political, and everyone knows that this award was given to Obama because he took over from George Bush, (who was detested in Norway).|||First of all this question has nothing to do with democrat or republican affiliation. If you guys have noticed even the democrats are split into the informed and uninformed. the informed ask why and how, while the uninformed just say congratulations and all republicans need to stop whining. even obama was thrown for a loop when he found out he won.
If you ask me it seems the award is now more about name recognition. For example in 2007 al gore beat out irena sendler who set up underground railroads freeing people from concentration camps in ww2, while al gore made a video that scientist even disagree with.
Now in 2009 Obama won for what he might do diplomatically in the future. Obama beat out Greg Mortenson who was nominated for the prize by some members of Congress, who the bookies gave 20-to-1 odds of winning. Son of a missionary, a former army Medic and mountaineer, he has made it his mission to build schools for girls in places where opium dealers and tribal warlords kill people for trying. His Central Asia Institute has built more than 130 schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan - a mission which has, along the way, inspired millions of people to view the protection and education of girls as a key to peace and prosperity and progress.
I really do think it has more to do with ADD mentality of society today. bring in a big name and a recent one at that|||Obama "humbly" states his winning the Nobel is a "call to action"....
....well, Mr McPresident: Show us THE ACTION!!! You haven't done a damn thing since you got elected---other than constantly jet the globe in Air Force One, running for a SECOND TERM, in the process---on OUR TAX $$$$.
Publisher's Clearinghouse sweepstakes awards are MORE prestigious than the Nobel, now that they've thrown one away to Obama.
Obama and Jimmy Carter: Both Nobel winners---both the worst ever U.S. Presidents.|||i agree the nobel peace prise is for good leaders not for not so good leaders
and i think that its the same thing as letting students get scholer ships for B grades instead of A its putting down the limets|||For Obama to win the Peace Prize for doing nothing but talking like an appeaser is shameful and fully in keeping with the spirit of the prize and the people who issued it.|||Yeah it is a joke and is a slap in the face of those who actually risked life and limb for peace. Obama did not do anything.|||Let's not forget the war-mongering Henry Kissinger who also won the Nobel "Peace" prize.
War is Peace.|||It doesn't. Yes, Reagan was a key figure in ending the cold war. But doing so with an arms race doesn't exactly qualify you for a peace prize.|||I have a rock that I found on the beach that I use for a paperweight that at this point means more than the Nobel Peace Prize.|||I am not certain it ever was all the illustrious. Heck maybe next year I have a chance at the one for physics.|||Republicans really have class.|||you have to do something to be honored|||Funny ain't it?...Aaah so stupid.|||鈥T DOESN'T
I*'m surprised that the Republican Party didn't endorse Arafat's win
They seem to be agreeing with Hamas by saying Obama didn't deserve it
You see----The Prize is for TRYING TO GET PEACE
The prize was awarded jointly to Arafat, Israel's Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres "for their efforts to create peace in the Middle East."
Peace was NOT achieved through these men's efforts
BECAUSE,
Like here in America
some don't want peace, they want to claim they are always right, to score POLITICAL POINTS
So in other words A RADICAL RIGHT WING foiled THAT peace too !!|||We knew you had a great President from the moment we heard him speak. We Canadians love him. We saw him reach out to countries and was ridiculed for being passive, finally you have a President you can be proud of. Bush made your country be hated worldwide provoking war and aggression.
Congrats to you all finally a President with Brains!|||thank you chloe!
why is it a canadian can see the change obama is bringing but americans cannot?? this is getting ridiculous!!!! in the short time he has been in office he has dont ALOT to bring change. how the hell can you expect him to do it overnight???
you people need to remember what being an american was suppose to be about and be proud for your president and your country! geesh!|||wa wa douchbag. Its calle the "peace" prize.
Something you whiney cons know nothing about.|||None. He changed George Bush's unlawful policies on torture. That is a peaceful policy stance.|||It really say something about the americans who cannot accept the honor our President and country was given.*|||How many grapes can go sour for you guys?
