1. women have been discouraged from taking prominent roles outside of the home throughout history, and even now it's far from evenly balanced (particularly in science and mathematics and engineering)- so there are far more male academics to choose from; you might compensate for this by estimating the ratio of female to male professors in universities worldwide, then see how that compares to the ratio of female to male nobel prize-winners.
2. the Nobel Prize committee (the judges) is/was quite conservative and traditional, and probably biased against women for many years - one notable case is Jocelyn Bell Burnett who discovered Quasars, but a man (her boss) got the credit for it;
...
to make a fair assessment you have to find a field in which women and men compete on equal terms - perhaps literature and peace/voluntary/community are the most suitable fields.
you could also try to define what "smart" means and how it can be measured. (number of nobel prizes is of course an easy way of measuring smartness, but it's probably too biased.)|||35 total since 1901
