Why Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize over somone like Irena Sendler, who saved 3000 babies in the Holocaust?

What is the explanation for giving Obama the Noble Peace Prize?

Do you think that Alfred Nobel would have made the same decision?|||I don't think Obama deserved it, and in fact, he doesn't think that he deserved it. It was premature, in the hope that he could bring peace, after George Bush's two terms. Now Irena Sendler hardly deserved it if her work was during the Holocaust, because the Holocaust was so long ago. It should be given for more recent events, in my feeling.|||Indeed, and how does that correspond with his recent attitude towards the Palestinian claim to statehood at the UN, and how does that attitude in any way or manner contribute to "peace" in the Holy Land? That, I fail to see.

But again, the fact that he won it over a Jewish acclaimed hero, is in itself a barter card that can be held up against his face, to deliver where he is asked to. Many recall Netanyahu's "congratulations Mr. president" after Obama made the instant U-turn from a former position in favor of the Palestinians, when he stated that "the Hamas Fatah understanding is harmful to the progress of peace". Indeed, as a fellow answerer said: "it was a sad day for the entire world", because Alfred Nobel would have belted himself with dynamite and blew himself up should he have lived to see what has become of the purpose of his most esteemed dedication.|||Wow, do you actually have any original thoughts in your head or do you just parrot old spamlore you can't be bothered to understand any facts about? Here are the facts: http://www.snopes.com/politics/war/sendl鈥?/a>

So first of all, Obama got the Nobel Prize in 2009. Sendler died in 2008, and they don't award Nobel Prizes to dead people--it's against the rules. So you can be damn sure Alfred Nobel would have made the same decision, because he's the one who made the rule that Nobel laureates must be alive to win.

Second, Sendler did many great things and deserved all accolades she could have received. But given that there were 63 years in which to award her a Nobel Prize following the end of WWII and her death, it's pretty weird to single out one solitary laureate, especially one who got the award after Sendler was no longer eligible. I guess you just want to use Sendler as a cheap shot to sully Obama. Sendler deserves better than that.

Third, if you knew anything about any of the other Nobel Peace Prize laureates over the decades, you could pick many whose win was more ghastly and inappropriate, like Henry Kissinger or Yassir Arafat. And what about all of the years when no award was given? Those certainly could have been better used in awarding them to Sendler, or to Social Workers in general.

And fourth, there's a great irony in your criticism. Irena Sendler was a social worker, as you will know if you bothered to read anything about her at all. As such, she was somebody who worked tirelessly and for little or no pay not just during the Holocaust, but as her life's work for the rest of her life, to help those in need--the vulnerable and downtrodden of society. This job that she did is the very kind of services that the conservatives want to abolish, and that Obama wants to save. Yet here you are, using Sendler's good name in an attempt to tarnish someone who is far more a champion of Sendler's work than are his enemies, who are enemies of Sendler's good deeds for the poor.|||This is a mystery. Obama had only been in office a short time when he

was named for the Nobel Peace Prize AND he hadn't even done anything

at that point. However, this Peace Prize has a history of being given to

questionable recipients, especially dictators who have definitely not been

men of peace.|||Although it was given to Obama because of the anticipation of his job rather than his actual actions at achieving peace, it was disgusting to see Americans say awful things about Obama even though he could not help what the Nobel committee thought.

The GOP = partisans, not patriots.|||If Gore and Obama can win the Nobel Peace Prize then it is a useless award, and means nothing, neither has done anything to earn that award. Obama has created more division in the world and this country than any other President in history, he is a useless leader.|||Don't forget Gore got one, too!

The award is a joke, obviously. No, not at all. When the award began, you had to achieve something beyond becoming a president or inventing the internet.|||Because it was meant to be symbolic, and as a way for the European liberals to pressure him into actually being a peace president.|||They were hoping that the Nobel Prize would prevent today's shitwar of a political process from happening.|||Because they didn't want to give it to a Republican. Republicans don't like Peace.|||Because firing 112 Tomahawk missiles at a foreign country is the epitome of peace.|||Because the awards a disgusting joke. Like obama himself|||Same reason Paul Krugman won, it is about far leftist politics and not actual peace or achievements.|||I was shocked when I saw that he had won that over Irena. He hasn't done anything for this country at all worthy of the nobel peace prize, Irena deserved it with all the lives she saved|||But she wasn't a member of the Chicago Mafia either.|||Only 30,000 Libyans dead so far. Not enough for 'peace'.|||That was a sad day for the entire world.|||Cause he is awesome.|||The Nobel Peace prize is a JOKE!|||That is a very good question. Would like to see how the libs are gonna answer this one...|||The NPP is a sham. I can't wait to see who they give it to next.
