What do you think are the reasons for which the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Barack Obama?

Barack Obama is the fourth President to win the Nobel Peace Prize behind Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Jimmy Carter. Tell with us why YOU think President Obama won this prestigious award.|||Honestly, I think it's definitely about the political zeitgeist. I actually like Obama, for the most part, but I don't feel that he truly deserved the award (at least, not at this point in time -- who knows what the future holds?). He hasn't been in power for long enough to have had any major impact on his own country, let alone the world.

Obama does have some good ideas, and some very lofty ambitions, but intention alone really isn't enough to justify the honour being bestowed upon him. In a few years, if his ideas pan out and have real, positive impact, give him an award. In the mean time, give it to someone who truly deserves it -- someone who has not only had a good idea, but put it to use and seen positive results. More than anything, I just find the whole thing a little bizarre.

I'm not going to speculate about silly conspiracy theories involving communists and anti-American politics, because I sincerely doubt that anti-Americanism has anything to do with this. I think he was given the prize because he's very popular right now on a world-wide scale. His ideas are popular. Unfortunately, people too quickly forget that an idea is meaningless if it doesn't come to harvest.

I caught a bit of his speech regarding the award earlier today, and even Obama seemed perplexed by the whole thing. I think he's handled the situation with grace and humility, so I'm not going to criticize him -- after all, it's not like he awarded the prize to himself.|||To weaken the US obviously. There is no other reason|||INFLUENCE.............ya thats what it is............|||Socialist committee members--Obama comes as close to their views as they could get. Two and two DOES equal four--ain't that something?|||Because he talked about ending one war and sent more troops to fight in another one|||To support the way Obama is destroying the U.S.|||Because the Nobel Peace Prize committee is run by a bunch of Communists.|||He is a marxist like the nobel commitee that nominated him.|||they were norwegian for gods sake you think they are manipulating us?

sheer paranoia

why cant it be for the reasons said?

they are not americans right wingers

they genuinely respect and like him

they norwegians!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you have to be kidding

but i have a story on why you doubt what it is

Æsop. (Sixth century B.C.) Fables.

The Harvard Classics. 1909–14.

The Fox and the Grapes

ONE hot summer’s day a Fox was strolling through an orchard till he came to a bunch of Grapes just ripening on a vine which had been trained over a lofty branch. “Just the things to quench my thirst,” quoth he. Drawing back a few paces, he took a run and a jump, and just missed the bunch. Turning round again with a One, Two, Three, he jumped up, but with no greater success. Again and again he tried after the tempting morsel, but at last had to give it up, and walked away with his nose in the air, saying: “I am sure they are sour.”

“IT IS EASY TO DESPISE WHAT YOU CANNOT GET.”

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges|||The answer is obvious- its' the only way to enforce common decency upon the least likely, in some cases, leaders to avoid yet another Holocaust. It is completely political, left wing, if you will and entirely justified as any and all other means have already been exploited and plumbed to their depths. Now get over it already as it has little if any meaning in the real world.|||Read what the Nobel Committee said. It was for what he promised to do in his campaign. They voted for him in February when he had been in office only a few days.|||Obama is an enigma.

He was heralded as the greatest president before he was president.

Now he's given the Nobel peace prize without giving us peace.

I think it's a distraction from something else, or a reminded for him to keep his eyes on the prize.

I don't think he was responsible for any of the rhetoric about him.

The man is a moderate, so ultimately he's not going to change much.

At least he's not a hawkish war head like Bush.|||Because they know that a lot of people will look at the fact that he won the Nobel Peace Prize and they will not question his policies to the extent they would if he hadn't been awarded this once prestigious award. Now the Nobel Prize is purely political. Whatever prestige was once associated with the Nobel Prize has been slowly eroding away and with this selection it is finally completely gone.|||Hey, Yasser Arafat won in 1994... anyone want to explain that one? Given the fact that this poser was nominated after only TWELVE days in office tells you that this was total propaganda, as is everything else connected with this Socialist liar.

I would like to know who nominated him after 12 days of his presidency. Unfortunately, we won't have that information for 50 years, as per Nobel policy.

Convenient...and as far as this being a "prestigious" award? No longer... hasn't been for some time.|||Europeans especially are extremely thankful that a rational and intelligent man is now the leader of the USA, the most powerful nation and military on earth. Bush and Cheney scared the living daylights out of them. When I visited my friends in Italy this past summer and when I spoke to some relatives in China they all felt the same way about Obama: he has brought hope for a better world. Americans are usually so damn parochial and our news media so full of the noise of tactics and gamesmanship that most of us don't have a clue how the rest of the world views us. Obama's election produced a massive sigh of relief and collective joy around the world. That is what this prize is about and if anyone bothered to read the statement of the committee they said it was about the hope and the new rationality and attempts to find common ground that have characterized Obama's campaign and his Administration thus far.|||Remember, the Nobel nominations are made in early February. Doofus - that's right I said DOOFUS! - took office January 20th. So he was President not even two weeks before he was nominated. And then he won. Amazing. The man didn't do a damn thing and he won.

Don't get me started on Jimmy Carter.|||I understand it's hard to hear anything positive about Obama with all the screaming from the right, meant to distract you from the good things Obama does. Our media totally sucks. Bet ya didn't hear this one:

"A 25-nation poll of 27,000 people released in July by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found double-digit boosts to the percentage of people viewing the U.S. favorably in countries around the world. That indicator had plunged across the world under President George W. Bush."

Obama has taken a much more multilateral approach than Bush did in the last eight years, and the world applauds it. Peace talks and negotiations with North Korea, Iran, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Russia. Outreach to the Muslim world. Drawing down in Iraq. Bringing Russia to the table over Iran (and against China) was HUGE. Nuclear disarmament talks. Strengthening the US role in combatting climate change.

Thousands of nominations were made right after Obama took office and his name was thrown into the hat, yes. But the talks and the decision about who was to win the prize *just took place*.

Obama is giving the money to charity, btw.|||Let me begin by calling the award by it name : Nobel Peace Prize .

1 . Obama seems to understand the proverb saying : The who plants

wind will harvest thunderstorm, that is why he decide to offer peace first to those who offer him war.

2. Obama administration has for objective to make life better for everyone in america and encourage other nation to do the same.

3. It seems to me the international community like his leadership, his vision, and what he stand for better than America|||Because the world is enthralled with President Obama these days.

Why?. . . Because he has has apologized for this nation everywhere he has spoken in the world, as if America is the world’s greatest threat to peace on the planet.

In addition he has committed himself to instituting domestic reforms that would undermine Capitalism and produce a mirror-image of the failed Socialist economies of Europe. That seems to get a lot of applause from the world community.

Finally, the President has indicated that he is willing to surrender American sovereignty to international organizations. He's batting 1000 with the UN crowd.

Some people think his receiving this award is laughable now. . . wait till the full consequences of his policies take full affect here in America within the next few years. The awarding of the NPP to Obama will seem as mind-boggling then, as the one received by Yassar Arafat in 1994 seems today.|||The nominations deadline for the Nobel Peace Prize was 12 days after barack took office. So.....basically barack was a senator that voted "present" 134 times, he didn't accomplish ANYTHING as a senator, and yet somebody thought he deserved to be nominated. Funny stuff! Since winning the election the ONLY thing he has actually done is spend 800 BILLION tax payer dollars. What a JOKE!

The reasons given for him winning are....."because of his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with the Muslim world and stress diplomacy." Because he's the ONLY president that has ever WANTED to do those things! It's almost as big of a joke as barack himself is!|||Because anyone willing to undo the tyranny 4 years of the Bush administration deserves the accolades of the entire world!
