I used to kind of revere the Nobel Prize like it's something to be proud of. Then, in the epitome of irony, a war mongerer gets the peace prize. To me this does two things: 1) demonstrates the total worthlessness of the Nobel Peace Prize and 2) calls into question the credibility of all the Nobel Prizes.
So do they hand out the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to someone in the hopes that they will make a breakthrough in chemistry, or do they hand it out to someone who actually has made a breakthrough in chemistry.|||No, the science prizes are awarded to people who have already made significant contributions. In fact, they are usually only awarded many years later, after the community has accepted and verified the scientific results made by the award nominees.
There are a few things you should consider. First off, the nomination for the science awards is done in a different way by different people (the Swedes) than the peace prize (which is done by the Norwegians). The nominees are nominated by experts in the respective fields. It is easy to know who the experts in physics or chemistry are, while it is not easy to know who the experts in peace are. In fact, peace is a very subjective term that means different things to different people. The sciences, on the other hand, are much easier to define and much easier to determine the importance of a contribution in. Therefore, the science awards should be viewed differently.
However, there are some odd things that go on in the science awards. There is some posturing that goes on in the community. The louder a certain scientist's supporters are, the more likely that person is to win. Also, people who do a better job of taking credit for their field of research are more likely to win. And many times, the contribution being recognized was made by more than three people. In those cases, only three people (at max) can win, meaning some people get cut out. There are plenty of cases where someone who should have been included was left off of a ticket in favor of someone who had a lesser contribution to the award. But this is unavoidable, since you can not make everyone happy. None the less, the science awards do highlight exceptional research, if they do not always go to the most deserving participant in that research.|||When you have won one, your opinion will be of value. Obama won for planning to reverse the mistakes of the previous administration.
BTW, are you a "War mongerer" [sic] for inheriting two wars and trying to pull out of only one of them?
And, for what it's worth, Ghandi never won a peace prize.|||I don't think they are worthless at all. Archbishop Desmond Tutu went out of his way to end apartheid in South Africa. Mahatma Gandhi used a non-violent approach to liberate India from British rule. Also, Benazir Bhutto did many great things for the women in Pakistan.|||A million dollars isn't worth as much as it used to be, but I'd hardly call it worthless.|||There are SUPPOSED to be handed out AFTER the fact. Even Obama wonders why he has been given one!
